WTF Friday?...5/30/2014

Some Daredevil casting news...
This guy, Charlie Cox, is playing Hornhead.
Not knowing anything about this guy, I looked him up on IMDb to see if I saw him in anything...
...nope...
...nuh uh...
...nnnnno...
So I still don't know who he is, and of all the pics I saw, the one above is the least "goof-ish" where he at least looks kind of lawyer-y.
And as weird as this casting may seem, Marvel's made weirder calls,

and things worked out in the end.
But the bigger WTF? for the day...
...is the revelation behind Marvel Studios and Edgar Wright's parting-of-the-ways.
In other words:
Rocket Raccoon
Apparently, Kevin Feige's been asking/ordering/whatevering for rewrites to the Ant-Man script. And it's been speculated that the reasoning behind his actions is that Feige et. al. has put a lot on the line with Guardians of the Galaxy - mostly, because of...

so everyone at Marvel Studios wants to "play it safe" with Ant-Man, their next film after Avengers 2. Said re-writes were moving away from Wright's vision, resulting in Wright leaving the project.
Honestly? I totally get both sides of the argument.
Wright's vision was clearly stated from the beginning and granted, he had to work to sell Marvel Studios on the idea, but there were no surprises in the direction Wright wanted to go.
Meanwhile, Feige et. al. are putting a lot on the line with GotG (and CA: TWS, and IM3, and even T: TDW), and should move back towards what most moviegoers like me want: a superhero film where the heroes act...you know...super like and...you know...beat the bad guys and...you know...win.
Which is why I've been saying from the get-go that Ant-Man should have been made first (going with whatever Wright's vision was, 'cause it'd been funny), follow that up with Avengers 2, and then take that extra risk outside the comfort zone with a film featuring a talking raccoon.
W...T...F...?
But, it should be noted that this news comes from source(s) outside of either camp...meaning that neither Wright or Feige is throwing dirt.
It also means this could be nothing more than groundless rumor, but it does make sense.
None of this affects my eagerness to see Ant-Man or GotG for that matter, so...

The day just got a little sadder...

Maya Angelou, renowned poet and author, has died.
I'm the first to admit it...I'm not big on poetry. In fact, it was my wife who sat me down and explained the poetic genius that is Shakespeare back when we were dating. She also told me that one of her favorite contemporary poets was Ms. Angelou.
I first heard of her when she read at Bill Clinton's Inauguration on January 20th 1993. She read "On the Pulse of Morning" (which won the Best Spoken Word Grammy in 1994) and became a nationally (if not internationally known artist.
You can look up her multitude of works and accomplishments elsewhere, but Maya Angelou has had a major influence on my life.
How influential?
My wife and I named Adorkette after her.

Are these costumes for real?

So some images of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have been released ...

...and I'm scratchin' my head.
Granted, these are prelim shots, and will probably show up somewhere in the second reel...meaning they'll be upgraded by movie's end.

But still...WTF?

Why I couldn't handle living in Seattle...

...but at least I get the coffee thing.
It's been raining throughout the weekend. In fact, today (Tuesday) marks the fourth rain-day straight. Which is great for the plants and trees I guess, as well as the grass (which I can't mow...).

I've always felt that there are people made for every type of weather. This explains why places like Seattle exist and why people (like Adorkette) would choose to live there voluntarily.

Mrs. Adorkification loves the coast and beaches (year-round by the way, not just in the Summer). New England particularly. She's never been to California and has never touched the Pacific Ocean. We joke that her internal compass would get all gunked up if the ocean was "on her left". Never mind Bermuda or Hawaii.

Me? I'm a Nor'easter type of guy. I love to ski (though I haven't in years), I love the mountains and I love the cold and the snow. (Although having to go drive in that stuff is another story). This is why Maine works for both of us.
But enough of this rain. It's driving me nuts...

Monday Movie Roundup...5/26/2014

And a Happy Memorial Day to all...
...and let's get to it.
It should come to no one's surprise that X-Men: Days of Future Past took the top spot making $261.7 million over the weekend worldwide. $90.7 million of that came from the States, while the remaining $171+ million from the Foreign market. The film had an estimated budget of $200 million, so it's made a profit right out of the gate.
Let's compare it to the other X-films...shall we?
Taking into consideration that this movie is roughly four days old, it's currently at the bottom of the list - #7 of all Mutant related films released to date. What's at #6? X-Men, as in the first film released back in 2000, which made $296.3 million and will most likely become #7 by the end of today (Monday).
But that's not even the most interesting thing. Wanna guess which film is #1 (at $459.4 million)?
Ga 'head...I'll give you a minute.

More Marvel Mix-Up News eh..?

Daredevil gets a new showrunner.
I knew nothing about this series other than it's due out (last I heard) January of '15. So when I heard that Drew Goddard, who was in charge of the thing, is no longer in charge of the thing my first thought was 'uh...okay..?'
In fact, all I want at this point is a cemented due date and a cemented cast...basically, anything in cement. Since I don't have any cemented anything, the fact that the person now in charge isn't the person who was in charge means nothing to me.
But hey...Daredevil's still coming to Netflix!

Oh...this doesn't sound good

Edgar Wright, the genius who convinced Marvel Studios...and the world...that an Ant-Man film could work has left the project.

I know...but let's slow our roll, take a step back and really look at this.
1) According to everybody, this split was equally "amicable". Granted, that could be bulls#!t, but as of right now, neither side is talking backsass. So that's good enough for me.
2) This news (as of this morning) does not affect the release date of July 17, 2015. This is significant because as of today, Ant-Man is the first film expected to be released after Avengers 2, and the only other Marvel Studios film due out in 2015. Plus, the cast has been set and the film is currently in pre-production.
3) There's been fantalk about putting this film on hold indefinitely so more ethnic-centric and female-centric films can be made. While I agree that there should be more of both - a) it isn't Marvel Studios' sole responsibility to make these kind of films, b) Ant-Man has been batted around since 2006 so bringing the point up now is kinda moot, and c) this doesn't prevent Marvel Studios from moving forward with their ethnic/female-centric films in 2016 and beyond.
4) As panic-inducing news as this is, it isn't the first time it's happened...
...Thor: The Dark World changed directors too, from Patty Jenkins to Alan Taylor.
We don't know the specifics, or what Jenkins' vision of the film was, but T: TDW made over $644 million worldwide and was a decent film - arguably better than Thor. Which means Marvel Studios has worked through this kind of change before and things came out well. Plus, Jenkins is on record for saying that the split was amicable and that she "looks forward to working with them again". This could be more bulls#!t, but no backsass as of yet.
So what do we do now?
Well, we wait and see I guess. If Marvel Studios can make a talking Raccoon work,
anything's possible.

WTF? Friday...5/23/2014

I know, I know...I missed a day. Sorry.
It opens this today (or yesterday afternoon - probably)!
I heard that Bryan Singer's a little upset that the X-Men Franchise is being compared to that of Marvel Studios' Avengers. Uh, Singer...get over it. They're both based on Marvel Comics. Of course they're going to be compared. And as for not having a character as popular as Iron Man in your mutant films...
 I think you're forgettin' someone.
What else is going on...
There was an interview with the cast and Kevin Feige recently.
In addition to Karen Gillan being asked the obligatory Doctor Who questions, it was revealed that there will be some easter eggs about other comic book Guardians of the past, as well as Avengers 2
Really? No kidding?
Did anything else happen while I was away?

Anything at all?
Wait...what..?

W...T...F...?
Seriously? They're going with Superman v Batman Dawn of Justice?
What does this tell us?
It tells me that instead of going the Avengers route, or even the reverse (meaning that they start with the group and then spin off into separate franchises), DC/WB plans to have a single film franchise using whoever they can get their hands on.
You said it recent-reunion-of-Firefly-cast.
(Although they should have pulled the camera back to show Wash's dead body on the floor in front of them...)
Happy Friday all!

Agent Carter series gets an episode count...

...and it's somewhere between seven and nine.
This series is being made for the sole purpose of filling AoS's  time slot during the second season's winter break.
Why this is good: It provides a back story without open-endedness. It will continue the precedent of the Netflix Marvel shows (also with limited episodes per series).
Why this is bad: Are you telling me AoS will be gone for eight weeks straight? If not, are you telling me both shows will air simultaneously?

THIS is a movie I'd like to see...

Why no one thought of this earlier is beyond me.
I mean, it's not without its precedent:
and It would be a great send-off before re-rebooting the franchise.
I don't know if this some sort of hoax/fan-art...but it shouldn't be.

Monday Movie Roundup...5/19/2014

Hello everybody!
Well, holy crap!
Godzilla was the one film everybody (who wasn't working the weekend) saw this weekend.
It made $93.2 million in the States, plus another $103 million everywhere else. Making a total of $196.2 million worldwide...in just four days.
I know, right?
Not only that, but the budget on this film was $160 million - so there's a nice little $36.2 million profit there.
But how does that rank against the other giant lizard remakes you ask? Well...
...Godzilla (1998), you know - the one with Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno and Hank Azaria? That one made $379 million worldwide...
...Godzilla 2000 the remake that was...made in Japan...made just over $12.9 million worldwide...
...Godzilla 1985 (which had Raymond Burr reprising his role from the original) made about $4.1 million in the states...
...and the original 1954 version (counting both the Burr and non-Burr versions) made roughly $5 million worldwide.
That's a lotta Godzilla, but this new version is sitting comfortably at the #2 spot of all 'zilla films.
AS-M 2 made another $16.8 million over the weekend, and has $633.2 million all told so far.
That still keeps it in fifth place of all Spidey films, but creeping ever closer to Amazing Spider-Man's $752.2 million worldwide gross.
CA: TWS made another $3.8 million and now has a worldwide total of $703.4 million.
It's more than $500 million away from Iron Man 3, but still a very respectable performance.
Have a good week everybody!
