This is by no means a deeply intense dissection of the episode.
That will happen over the summer after my purchase of the Blu-ray.
I've put my quick comments and notes after seeing the episode only once after the jump.
You've been warned...
Season 2 Episode 11: "Aftershocks"
The Good:
Let me start with this - we're only on Episode 11. We've got 11 more episodes coming. Hang on, let me check my calendar...
...this puts the season finale at May 19th, assuming we get new episodes (with no reruns or breaks) straight through. So the Avengers: Age of Ultron tie-in will have some "after-effects" on the show. Here's hoping they actually mean something. Onto the review-type-thing...The Good:
Did they know something we didn't?
Coulson's plan.
Getting HYDRA heads to kill each other = Brilliance!
Fred "Hunter" Dyer as a member of HYDRA? Works for me!
The Bad:
and
Looks we've got another subplot of corruption from within.
That's just f**king great.
Then there's this guy.
Is he Nightcrawler? Quicksilver? Karnak? Gorgon?
Could he be, I dunno, ANYBODY FROM THE BOOKS?
Nah. They'll just make him some other somebody that no one who read Marvel before they went bankrupt would recognize.
(sigh...)
Raina.
She's become "something". That's great! She's been waiting to become "something" since Episode 5 of Season 1. And we finally get to actually see her as something else...halfway through the episode...but she's totally unrecognizable to me. Maybe she's another post-bankruptcy character?
Oh- have I mentioned the car crash?
Yeah. There's another "unexpected" car crash.
But see, this time it was planned! Which also explains how amid all that gunfire the guy sitting in the vehicle with no bulletproof anything to speak of was unharmed when he was taken.
Let me take a knee for a sec...
The WTF?:
This is Skye. Also known as Daisy.
This is Quake. She's Daisy/Skye in the books.
But this is AoS, so do we actually see Daisy/Skye actually do Quake-type stuff?
No. We don't.
Instead, we get a lot of Daisy/Skye standing, sitting and pacing behind glass. She stresses, things shake and a light bulb explodes.
Is it money? Is that the problem?
Could the reason behind Daisy/Skye not using her new, uncontrolled powers to blow the place up and escape into the wild to be chased by Coulson and HYDRA (which would have been be a GOOD story) simply be that ABC won't dig deeper into that $1 billion of Avengers cash to spring for a second CGI company? I mean, they had the time...over eight weeks worth. They had no problem giving us those sweet three seconds of Daisy/Skye "quaking" herself free back in December. I wasn't looking for a Tesseract-style Project Pegasus sized explosion, but a shattered glass wall? A hole?
The hell?
And why is Simmons all "anti-life" all of the sudden? I can understand why she'd reach that point, but why now? Why not back when Bobbi pulled her out of HYDRA, when she realized that science could be used for "bad things" and not every discovery could be good?
Then there's this:
Fitz says the word. It's a thing now.
Oh, okay...you sure?
Adorkification Moment: So S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plan is to flood the underground Inhuman place? I got one word:
Atlanteans.
But again this is AoS, so we'll probably won't get any sort of allusion to them until Season 5.
