Monday Movie Roundup...3/31/2014

Morning everyone! Hope you had a good weekend...
Noah grossed the most over the weekend, with just over $95 million  worldwide.
Interestingly, the gap between Domestic ($44 million) and Foreign ($51 million) was smaller than I thought.
I haven't heard much about the film other than the hulu trailers,
but I didn't know that Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins were in it.
It cost $125 million to make, and will no doubt break even by the weekend...
...it just might not be #1 again.
Muppets Most Wanted took in another $11.3 million in the states, making the worldwide total just shy of $41 million.
Only $9 million to go before becoming profitable.
It's only been out 10 days, so I don't see that as a problem.

300: Rise of an Empire and 3 Days to Kill are both in the black...
Oh, this is interesting -
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is still in some theaters.
Granted, it only made about $69,000 but I haven't heard a film being out on Blu-ray/DVD and in theaters at the same time.
I don't have a problem with that, but it is weird.
What's this...WHAT'S THIS???
Captain America: The Winter Soldier's made over $75 million this weekend?
Overseas?
Okay. I get that some films, even Marvel Studios films, are released in foreign countries before the U.S.
I normally attribute that phenom to deals struck for certain shooting locations,
or even the nationality of the star(s) involved.
But when you have a film about character that is symbolic of the U.S.,
and (for most of the film anyway) was filmed and/or takes place in the States,
I can't for the life of me understand why other countries get first dibs.
Don't get me wrong, $75 million is $75 million...
I just question the politics is all.
In any case, Cap Am: TWS is on a roll!

An AoS Update...

...I guess this means we're nearing the end of the season.
My understanding is that there are 22 episodes this season. 'Yes Men' was the most recent, and it was #15. Doing some quick math, that leaves 7 unaired episodes, giving us seven more weeks.
According to my trusty rusty calendar, Tuesday May 13th will be the season-ender.
Who's willing to bet that AoS will be released on Blu-ray/DVD the same day as Winter Soldier?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier...an update

Winter is Coming...
Okay, I deserved that.
I'm looking around online for release times for Winter Soldier and all I can find is 8:00 pm Thursday night.
And while I must admit that I'm getting older and can't do the Midnight showing thing as much as I'd like, it seems there's not going to be one at all.
Whatever happened to that wonderful experience?
Anyway, it looks like 8:00 it is. Now I'll have to decide whether to see it in IMAX 3D or not...
...but see, the Mrs. isn't a fan of the IMAX thing...
...well, you try to talk some sense into her.
Besides, I'll probably see it again that Sunday with Adorkette...in IMAX 3D!

WTF? Friday...The Hulkbuster Edition...3/28/2014

Sorry for the lateness, but I saw this and had to put in my 2 cents about what I saw during Marvel Studios' Building a Universe show last week:
That's the Hulkbuster Armor...fighting Hulk.

Yeah...I'd watch that...
But here's my spin...that's not Tony Stark in the armor...it's Ultron.

W...T...F...?
'Cause you know...wtfn?

And now...Empire cover #19

Here's Ariel, Sprite, Shadowcat, Kitty Pryde!
* Another black outfit, but at least there's no obvious body armor.
* Not sure what's going on with the pants, and what the heck's with the arm things. I mean yeah, they look cool, but why?
* I'm glad to see Ellen Page again. Did you know that Pryde is the only other Marvel character (besides Bruce Banner) to be played in three different films by three different actors?

...uh, yeah...I guess you did...

So...about Chris Evans...

First of all, let's relax about the news that he's leaving acting.
He's not turning his back on Cap or Marvel Studios,
and he's repeatedly stated that he's committed to fulfilling the contract he signed.
Secondly, he's only leaving acting...not directing.
So there is a distinct possibility he could be be in the director's chair for a future Marvel Studios project.
Who knows, he might even direct his replacement.
I'm glad he's made his decision known to the public,
and I get why he chose now to do so...
...because of all his time with the press for Winter Soldier.
It was a smart move on his part, so we prepare for a different Cap,
or no Cap at all,
following Avengers 3.
So lighten up people!

Who's that on Empire cover #18?

Why it's none other than James Proudstar himself!
* I can't say much about the costume, because I can't make out much of it. But I'm glad they went with a look closer to this:
than this...
...effin' Liefeld...
* As for his abilities...wait a minute...
...he can fly...?
Since when can Jimmy fly?
That ain't right.
Nope.
No way.
Who let Liefeld into the room?

Monday Movie Roundup...3/24/2014

It's been a crazy day all around, so let's get to it!
Twilight...I mean Hunger Games ...I mean Divergent took the top spot, with roughly $56 million over the weekend.
The price tag on this film was $85 million, which will most likely be reached by this weekend.
Muppets Most Wanted (note the "Disney" in there) took the silver, with about $18 million worldwide.
This film cost $50 million to make.
Yeah, there's no way the first Muppet movie cost that much. Must be Disney...
Anyway, I have no doubt this will make that back plus interest,
it's just that everyone's been busy watching  flippin' Frozen for the thirteenth flippin' time.
Either that or Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent...DANGIT!!!
300: Rise of an Empire broke more than even with $289.1 million so far.
While this isn't on my "gotta see it in the theater" list, I'm still happy for it.
Non-Stop is up to...is this right...$142 million?
Wow - that's pretty good.
In fact, I was at work a while back and an elderly woman came up to me and asked if I've seen it yet.
I told her I hadn't, and she started going on about how wonderful it was.
Now this woman was in her mid- to late-seventies.
At least.
And she was going on about how she loved all the action and what-not and how great an actor Liam Neeson is.
I have no doubt the film is good, and I like Neeson, but when I'm a seventy-plus year old,
I'll be too busy worrying about possible health issues to see something like that in the theater.
But at my home...on my nth-generation-Blu-ray-player...that's a different story.
Speaking of action films,
3 Days to Kill made a profit over the weekend with $29.7 million in the bank.
Luc Besson was one of the producers, and he co-wrote Taken and Taken 2.
I'm starting to think the follow up game to "6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon" should be "6 Degrees of Liam Neeson".
Did you know he was on at least one episode of Miami Vice back in the day?
I kid you not.
Have a good week everybody!
