Batman's got a costume!..plus other stuff?

So, this happened...

I like the suit...and the car, but the symbol finally made me realize what DC's been trying to tell me after all these years of film and animated reboots - 

ELSEWORLDS

That's the message I'm getting. Not a bad thing, I just wish they came out and said so from the get go. Plus it makes sense. This way, everyone can enjoy whatever version of whichever medium they choose...'cause there ain't no wrong one.

Look, first of all we don't have cable, we get our television through the internet (thank you Hulu Plus). So I have to wait at least a day if not more. Secondly, I worked this morning. So I just got home, and am dedicating my richly deserved "non-work time" to blog about the fact that I've been too busy to watch the damn show. So there.

I came to The Blacklist party late, but Mrs. Adorkification brought me up to speed.

It's a good show...to blow off some steam when yelling to no one else in the room how stupid the FBI agents are on this show. I can't be the only one upset by this. Ressler alone should have turned in his badge by episode 4.

Booth doesn't like it when the Feds look bad.

And finally...

...but I liked it more than I thought I would. This is the first I've heard of Seth Meyers, He seems pretty talented, so I'm sure he'll go places.

And now, some not quite Monday Movie news...

I know it isn't Monday, but I just love using this pic.

So I found out a couple of interesting things:

X-Men: Apocalypse...or whatever the hell they call it...will take place in the '80's.

I've always been on the fence with the X-Men film franchise. There's a feel to it that's unique, and separate, from the Marvel Studios Avengers stuff. I get that. The books were the same way back when they were written by Mutant Guru and Soap Opera Aficionado Chris Claremont. Most of the casting has been dead-on, and a few I deemed "okay". X-Men: The Last Stand and Origins: Wolverine looked great on paper, but we all know how they turned out. I can get past a misstep, an attempt to tell a story that fell short of execution. I can even get past two missteps. Then X-Men: First Class came out, and I felt like I was watching a Dr. Who series with all this wibbly-wobbly. It looks like Singer et al. have chosen a direction and are going down that path. Fine. Just give all of us fans the opportunity to understand just where the f**k we're headed! Is that too much? I mean, do X-Men and X2 still count? Are they the On Her Majesty's Secret Service of the X-Franchise? Or are they more like Superman: The Motion Picture and Superman II? I don't have a preference one way or the other, I just wanna know.

Having said that,

I like the idea of an X-film set in the '80's. I'll see it, no question. And I'll drag Adorkette with me and geek out over all the references.

The other bit of movie news I heard was that Man of Steel will be released the same day as Captain America 3. (Can I just say how awesome it is to hear news about comic films coming out two years from now?) I'm all for this, and can't wait for other publishers (Valiant) to come out with their own film franchises (X-O Manowar) someday. 

Also - Sebastian Stan has signed a nine picture deal. I'm not sure if that includes what he's done so far, or any appearances on AoS, but either way - this is fantastic news. Why?

* It means Marvel Studios has big plans for more movies beyond 'Phase 3'.

* It opens up the possibility that they'll do a variation on the storyline where Steve abandons the Captain America persona and roams the country as 'The Captain', leaving Barnes to take up the mantle. (Yeah, I know there's been a more recent story about Steve getting "killed" and Barnes becoming this all-new, all-different Cap, but that's just silly.)

* It proves that Marvel Studios knows that while actors will come and go as time moves on, their characters will be around for a helluva long time.

Monday Movie Roundup...2/3/2014

Morning everyone. How bout a three-fer, starting with numbers...

 American Hustle made another $4.3 million over the weekend, bringing the worldwide total to $176.8 million.

I, Frankenstein made a respectable $3.5 million, which puts its worldwide total just shy of $30.7 million.

The Hobbit: TDoS earned another $1.24 million to its worldwide total of $854 million,

while The Hunger Games: CF (which I'm surprised is still in theaters) made an additional $1 million.

This puts the total for this film at almost $859.6 million.

The Invisible Woman made another $170,000, bringing its Domestic total,

since it hasn't been released worldwide, to $874,000.

 And 47 Ronin made $126,000 over the weekend...which makes me sad.

However, the worldwide total broke $130 million.

So, yay I guess?

The Super Bowl was last night, and with it came some trailers...

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the big one I was waiting for, and it didn't disappoint.

I knew Fury was in the SUV that Bucky blew up, but I was wondering how injured he'd be.

Plus, there's more Falcon, and he's awesome!

Then there was The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

It does feel like they're working towards a Sinister Six team-up for TAS-M 3, 

and I still say the guy-in-the-hat is Chameleon.

I'm surprised there wasn't a trailer for X-Men: DoFP.

If there was one, I missed it, but nothing showed up on YouTube this morning.

Now for some reaction:

Not sure how I feel about these choices.

I didn't think Amy Adams would work, and I was proven wrong.

In fact, the more I think about it I feel that of all the things I didn't like about MoS,

casting wasn't one of them.

So I'm gonna file this under 'W' for 'Wait and See'...

Now I have to get ready for work.

About this date change for the Man of Steel sequel...

The consensus supports this decision by Warner Brothers, because it shows that the studio cares about the product.

I agree...but I've got a gripe.

No, not that one,

not that one either.
My gripe is with DC/WB's film schedule.

Between now and when this film comes out, Marvel will have released at least eight.
Four of them coming from Marvel Studios and the rest from FOX and Sony.
I'm all for quality over quantity,  but what Warner Bro's needs to do is get more stuff in the hopper.

Arrow is a good show, and they're working towards at least one spin-off.
That's wonderful.
But that's all they've got aside from animation...which I don't count because that's its own thing.
There's been rumors for a while of other stuff going on,

but rumors don't make product...or money.
I'm just saying that we need more movies from the house of DC/WB.

No no...I said movies.

Amy Adams was asked recently what she thought of a possible Lois Lane-Superman-Wonder Woman

love triangle in Man of Steel 2.

What's interesting isn't her response...

...it's that no one asked the more obvious question: what she thought of a Batman-Lois Lane-Superman love triangle.

Which, by the way, was done before back in 1997.

Monday Movie Roundup...8/26/2013

The top film this past weekend worth mentioning is Kick-Ass 2...

 ...which brought in another estimated $4.2 million, placing it just inside the weekend Top 10 at #10.
Worldwide, the film has made $38.5 million, which more than pays back the $28 million production costs.
The film at eleventh place, however, is more interesting...

2 Guns has made over $65 million after four weeks - with only $2.2 million of that from Foreign markets - and a $61 million production budget.
In other words, a movie based on a lesser known and independent (meaning non-Marvel or DC) comic property proved profitable in less than 5 weeks...despite the outrageous price tag.
That's amazing, and (along with the Kick-Ass franchise) proves that comics can make great films.

Also making news:
* The Wolverine is still in the Top 20 (at #15), and
* the Ben Affleck Batman/Superman film has a release date of July 17, 2015...eleven weeks after Avengers 2 The Age of Ultron.

That's going to be an interesting summer...

Okay Adorkette...WTF?

So I tell my daughter that Batman (her 'favorite superhero') is going to be in the next Man of Steel movie...

"Oh yeah? Cool!", she says.

Then I tell her Ben Affleck's been cast...

"Who's Ben Afflck?", she replies.

So I Google his picture...

"Oh YEAH!", she screams.

"No, wait..." I tell her. "...you don't understand. He can't act!"

"Well...what's he been in?"

And my mind races to think of anything she's seen that I know he's been in:

Shakespeare in Love...hasn't seen it.

Jersey Girl...nope.

Good Will Hunting...uh-uh.

I was about to say "Well, we could watch Daredevil. I've got it on DVD..." when Mrs. Adorkification cuts me off - 

"He can't act."

Then I actually felt bad.

"Well to be fair, I haven't seen Argo yet..."

"He can't act", she repeated.

"Now that other guy, that's been Batman..."

"Christian Bale..."

"Yeah. HE can act!"

"Well, that's true..."

"Although...he could make a descent alter-ego."

"You mean Bruce Wayne?"

"Yeah. I can see Ben in that role, but not jumping around rooftops in the suit."

Then Adorkette takes another look at the pic...

"Well...I'd see it..."

...*sigh*...

WOW are people pissed...

I can't believe how big this thing has become.

I mean, I can understand some people getting upset...

...and others calling Ben out...

...but let's put things in perspective here.

1) Superman came first. 

In the world of comics, Batman was created after Superman was a proven success and yes, it's possible that we'll see a young Bruce witness his parents' murders (yes...again...) and watch him become Batman (for hopefully the last time) as he is integrated into the growing DCMU. But in this upcoming film...

2) Batman is a supporting character.

Remember when this issue came out? When John Byrne was given the daunting task of not only revamping Superman...but the entire DC Universe? The first appearance of Post-Crisis Batman wasn't Frank Miller's legendary Batman #404 (Feb. 1987), it was here in The Man of Steel #3 (Nov. 1986).

A Superman comic.

So it's possible that in Superman/Batman, Superman (or Clark) has to go to Gotham City to investigate these "Bat-sightings" and winds up helping Batman with a case.

Unlike Marvel Studios, which gave each major character their own film and then teamed them up, DC/WB is understandably taking a different route: Building their movie universe through incorporating new characters in each film. A challenge for sure, but I'd like to see them continue this trend. Especially with the whole "Can Wonder Woman be a successful female lead?" thing. Because you know she'll be in #3.

3) Ben Affleck isn't the first comic film casting surprise.

Hard to believe now, but remember a little film that came out in 2001 where a 6'2" Australian actor with a background in musical theater was cast as a 5'3" Canadian brawler with a background shrouded in mystery?

Yeah...he did alright...

So we'll see...

...in their desperate attempt to cast their next great hero...

...they've gone off the deep end.

Now, we know that this Batman will be different from Nolan's Batman series.

I'm okay with that...

...but shouldn't we learn from history?

I've never seen Argo, and I don't have any issue with Affleck as a director.

And the more I think about it, Affleck could make a very good Bruce Wayne...

...but this?

If Ben ends up cheating on his wife with Amy Adams, I'm gonna be SO pissed...

Let's talk about a Lex Rumor...

I've already made my casting choice for this role, which must...at all costs...appear in Man of Steel 2 Superman vs. Batman -

- but there's a rumor that another bald-ish actor may be/has been approached for the role:

Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad and (for me) From the Earth to the Moon and Malcolm in the Middle.

Now, I haven't seen a single episode of BrBa, but my wife has...all of them...so if she's any judge of acting ability Cranston's got the "likable bad guy"-thing down.

Me? All I'd see is the hairy guy standing behind a newspaper while his wife trims him...in the kitchen no less.

Either that or Buzz Aldrin offering a prayer while in the landing module...but this?

I'm not so sure...
