I've been hearing/reading a bunch of stuff about both Marvel and DC looking to expand into television. DC's got Arrow coming out, and Marvel is replacing their Avengers-EMH animated series with another Avengers-type cartoon.
I understand why they want to do these things, but the regular television series (or animated series) format never appealed to me. The network could pull the plug at any time, and the show(s) would need a steady regular time-slot unaffected by things like sporting events.
I think both companies should look to a different type of televised format altogether...
...the soap opera.
Hear me out -
1) Soap operas air daily, Monday through Friday. So there's very little "down-time" for the audience...like the two or three year wait between movies, or the "when-we-get-around-to-it" mentality of networks.
2) They air all year long...meaning no "summer hiatus" or mid-year replacement shows to interrupt the flow of the show.
3) Looking at General Hospital, As the World Turns, etc...what kinds of stories are there? Love triangles, betrayals, characters that were killed off years ago suddenly re-appearing...sometimes played by completely different actors. Throw in super powers and the occasional special effect and you've got living, breathing comic-books.
4) Actors need work, and the current soap operas are dying out. Plus, something's gotta fill those time slots.
5) Thanks to current technology, if fans like me are working during the day, we'll catch up on Hulu. Heck - we'd buy the DVD/Blu-rays.
6) The demand for more super-hero themed shows is growing. What better way to introduce lesser-known characters/places than on a soap? I can see Ant-Man working better as a ten-part serial than a big-budgeted film.
and finally...
7) Remember the movie Soapdish? It was a comedy about a fictional Soap Opera show...and starred Robert Downey Jr., Teri Hatcher and Sally Field. I understand they've had some experience with super-hero franchises...
