I agree, it does have to go, but I understand the reason why it's there.
Cap’s costume always had a helmet, ever since he wore in during WWII - which the last time
he breathed fresh air. It’s become a part of him, almost as much as the shield. It also defines him…almost as much as the shield.
Plus, the helmet dates him, meaning it makes him look out of place…which is exactly what he is. Cap is a man taken out of his time and dropped into a world with an enormous Times Square, Norse Gods, Gamma-irradiated monsters and a technological genius who is older than his father was when Steve met him during the war.
I think that
by the end of the film, he will have more “time-appropriate” headgear if in fact he has head gear at all. Because when you think about it, Cap's costume changed throughout Captain America, so there's no reason why it won't continue to evolve.
