As I mentioned yesterday, I only got three FCBD books this year (Why don't I ever remember to request that day off?), and book #2 includes this guy:

Free Comic Book Day 2014 Goodies...Pt. 1

I didn't have the chance to scope out all my local stores, just the one closest to work, so I only got three books. I'm not sure how it's supposed to go, but this store had all the books behind the counter, and one of the clerks asked me what kind of comics I liked...

Now as much as I would like to have said "One of each please and thank you", I was good and said "Superhero".

So I got three books. On top of that, I've been busy, so I've only had a chance to read one of them:

This was my only DC book in the bunch, and I'm about to talk about it after the jump. You've been warned.

My how time flies...

It occurred to me in the shower...where most of my 'deep thoughts' occur...that I've been out of the weekly comic subscription thing for about 18 years now.

(Although I have gotten the occasional one-shot, mini-series, maxi-series, FCBD giveaways, etc...)

That blows my mind. Not just because I'm out if the loop when it comes to what's going on with the weekly development of my beloved characters, but because despite the 18 year (and growing) gap I still keep in touch with my favorite hobby through the 'net, and blog about it.

You know when something's got a hold on you when still care about it even after you've stopped being an active participant of it.

Is it wrong of me to wish that one day I'll have a podcast where I can bitch comment on how comics "ain't what they used to be" and reminisce on stories gone by?

On a somewhat related note, Mrs. Adorkification and I saw Arrow last fall, and it always bothered her when I noticed a comic reference or cameo...

...I can't imagine how she'll react when I geek out every ten seconds during S.H.I.E.L.D.

Being a 40+ year old geek has its perks.

That's Today?

You ever have one of those years when time sort of gets away from you and next thing you know you look at a calendar and say to yourself: "That's Today?"...

Yeah...it is...

Listen up people: Today is May 5th, 2012.

Free Comic Book Day.

Not only that, the 10th anniversary of FCBD.

So get out there and check things out!!

The main purpose of FCBD is to promote comics as a healthy medium for kids of all ages and to get new readers, but another purpose is to boost local economies by having comic shops host events and draw customers in.

I'm a supporter of both, but I understand the current economic situation...in fact, I'm living the current economic situation. Simply put, I don't have a lot of extra income to spend on fun things. The Avengers is taking a bite out of what little I have. However, I'm going to not just one, but two separate comic shops today to see what they've got going on and take part in the FCBD experience. If I see something I want, and it's on sale (because most shops now have a cheaper "used" section) I'll buy it. If I don't find anything, I'll still be supporting my local businesses by simply being there.

As for the other purpose - that of introducing new readers to the medium - and you're strapped for cash, do what I've done with my daughter: go to your local library. They've got trades there. No. Really. My daughter's into The Walking Dead and I've been catching up with older Transmetropolitan issues. I've also (finally) read V for Vendetta. As a result, I've added more to my "buy them when I can" list.

So get out there damnit, and bring your kids. Doesn't matter if it's just for free stuff, Mickey Mouse, Marvel, DC, independents or Tarot of the Black Rose. Bask in the glory of FCBD!

Then grab some Coronas and have a fajita or two - Cinco de Mayo man...Cinco de Mayo...
