More DC on TV? (WTF? Friday...5/15/15)

Let's take a look at what DC has on its television schedule:

Well, yeah - I knew about that,

W...T...F...?

(sigh...)

There's no question that DC's had a stronger presence on television than in film. This goes way back to the The Adventures of Superman cartoons in the fifties. 

While Marvel's attempts on the small screen...

...have ranged from laughable...

...to passable...

...to legendary,

DC's been busy lately,

to varying degrees of success.

But this?

Should Supergirl get her own show? Sure. Why not. I've always been a believer that any character, when done well, could carry their own series - be it comic or television - with the emphasis on the well.

 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is decent, but if it focused more on Coulson's activities within S.H.I.E.L.D. (both before and after its downfall), it would be a lot better. And that's a blog for another time.

This feels slapped together.

Ally McBeal as a bitchy Ugly Betty-type CEO? Kara cast as a twenty-something woman...but portrayed as an awkward teenager? 

I'm just not feeling it.

And that's not even dealing with the whole "where in the Arrow/Flash universe does this take place" thing. Which is another problem I have with all of DC's television shows.

Just sayin'...

Speaking of the Arrow/Flash 'verse:

Let's take a closer look.

Suicide Squad? Absolutely. Legends of Tomorrow? HELL no!

Was Ronnie even in the promo? Where the hell was he?

You need Rip Hunter to get the time-travel angle? Okay. But does he have to be British?

"Cause he sounds too much like this guy...and I was disappointed that it wasn't him.

This I'm okay with...but why isn't she Hawkwoman?

This threw me. 

Not because Caity Lotz is back...it's that she's White Canary - a character I've never heard of. But I could watch her kick a$$ all day. Even Laurel's.

(Ahem...)

Then there's this guy.

I like The Atom from the comics, and I like the casting...and portrayal of Ray Palmer...so far. My problem here is the look. It's Iron Man meets Ant-Man. My hope is that the armor is temporary - like Chris Evans' helmet/face-mask - and will eventually disappear altogether while still maintaining the "shrinkability". 

Okay DC, you've certainly got my attention...

...but now you have to deliver.

So...another Barry Allen eh?

Oh DC. what. the. hell?

I'm sure you all have heard by now that...

...this guy isn't going to be Flash in the DCMU...

...this guy is.

I know, but wait! There could be something cooking!

Well yeah, besides that.

As I've mentioned time and time before, there's a slight possibility DC's got something up their sleeve:

It means...that the TV 'verse may in fact meet up with the movie 'verse...

...with even Smallville thrown in...

...and Bale's Batman!

THAT...would actually put Marvel Studios on it's heels.

Constantine's got his Spectre...

...well, actually Jim Corrigan.

While I wasn't a big DC comics fan, 

I was a huge Spectre reader.  

I don't expect The Wrath of God to appear in Season One, but I'm glad they're building the DC Dark Universe. Now if they could just get on with it!  I'm tired of waiting until October to start watching new seasons or new shows. 

Too much DC Television...

In addition to the BvS:DoJ panel, DC had a panel for their current and upcoming television shows.

That was the good news. The bad news is that they (DC) decided to put various cast members from all four shows in a single panel. The result was a 62 minute event with too much going on.

* Stephen Amell, a great actor and doing a great job on Arrow, was not quite the best choice for emcee. It took like ten minutes before everyone took the stage and the moderator showed up. Now, it's possible Amell was stalling, but even so...they should consider giving him a co-emcee up front next time.

* Never...and I mean never...put that many people for that many different shows on the stage at one time. It forces the moderator to pick and choose who to talk to, and leaves everyone else just sitting there waiting their turn. It also limits the number of questions to ask, the number of topics to discuss and the lengths of the answers. Same goes for the poor audience members waiting in line to ask their questions. Maybe this was done because DC Television only had one panel over the whole con, which I could see happening because of budget and/or time constraints. If that was true, couldn't they have used at least some of the time and space from the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice panel? Next year, DC should consider combining all of their new projects in one panel, and all their returning series in another. Or maybe using more of the smaller halls over all four days? I don't think fans would mind.

I will say I'm glad that DC's television presence is expanding. I like Arrow and can't wait to at least try the other shows. Flash looks great, and I'm glad that they are in fact putting both shows in the same 'verse. As for Constantine, I'm not familiar with the comics or even that side of the DC universe, but the trailer's got me hooked for at least two episodes. Gotham leaves me undecided. I get the premise, but the commercials haven't grabbed me. I'll most likely watch the pilot, and just the pilot, unless there's something there that gains my interest.

Come on fall...get here already!
