Robin III Part 41: War of the Gods #4 (December, 1991)

Tim plays a part in saving the world…albeit a small part.

I have this issue.

Tim’s in Gotham with Bruce as they witness New Olympus approach. He’s awestruck at the sight, but Bruce mentions that he’s seen “oblivion peeping over the horizon” too many times.

As other teams of heroes attack her on several fronts, Circe launches her army of harpies and bestiamorphs on Earth…starting in Gotham. Tim fights back, alongside Batman, Black Lightning, Katana and Looker. He catches one creature in a Bat-line – only to be carried away. Fortunately, Bruce is there to knock it out of the sky.

1) This is Part 25 (and the finale) of the War of Gods storyline.

WTF? Moment: After being carried away by a harpy in Batman #470, you’d think Tim would have learned to keep his feet on the ground…

WTF? Moment #2: I hope somebody told Tim and the others when the fight was over…or that Wonder Woman wasn’t dead. Sure – the disappearance of New Olympus from the sky (along with the harpies) would have been a sign that they won, but I didn’t see anyone announce Diana’s resurrection over the comlink to the Gotham crew. Whoops.

Robin III Part 40: Wonder Woman #61 (January, 1992)

Tim joins with many other heroes (and some villains) in mourning Diana’s passing, ready to end the War of the Gods.

I have this issue.

Superman gives the eulogy at Diana’s memorial service, where everyone gathers to pay their respects and prepare for the upcoming final battle.

Notes of Interest:

1) This is Part 24 of the War of the Gods storyline.

WTF? Moment: Tim makes an appearance on the last page of the book, and doesn’t say a word. Now - the last page is a splash page, with the gathered heroes and villains shouting “For Diana!” I expect Bruce to stay quiet. He’s Batman…but Tim? He’s young, energetic, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with many heavy hitters. Why wouldn’t he be pumped? My guess is that Bruce told him not to. It’s more dramatic and brooding that way.

Robin III Part 38: Batman #470 (October, 1991)

Tim meets another of Batman’s rogues as they track down a mystical object.

I have this issue.

Tim helps Bruce “ask” some fence about the location of the Themysciran Goblet and they get a lead that takes them to Arkham. When they get there, Tim learns about the Cheetah’s recent assault on the facility. Bruce looks over the list of inmates, but can’t find any connection to either Cheetah or the Goblet – until Tim shows him the list of those recently released…

As they leave Arkham with a new target to find, Tim’s taken away by a harpy. Bruce frees him and together they tie the creature to a lamppost.

They reach their destination: the mansion of Maxie Zeus. After some gunplay, Tim witnesses Bruce get captured when another prisoner is brought out, and follows Zeus as he takes them to the Goblet…which is in the middle of a pit full of spikes. Tim makes his play just as Bruce is about to be thrown in, and manages to grab the Goblet before Zeus’ lightning bolt shatters it. He also manages to knock out Zeus in the same move.

Back at the Cave, Tim looks on as Bruce inspects the item…and is left scratching his head as Bruce races off in the Batmobile.

1) This is Part 15 of the War of Gods storyline.

2) It is also the first time Tim faces Maxie Zeus.

WTF? Moment: The only question I have is when Tim makes his move for the Goblet. It’s in the middle of a spike-pit…in the middle of a field…and Tim just swoops in on a Bat-line and grabs it? Just how long is Tim’s line? I’m not saying it couldn’t reach the pit, but it would have been more believable if artist Norm Breyfogle had Tim swing out and let go of the line before grabbing the thing and knocking out the bad guy.

Robin III Part 37: War of the Gods #2 (October, 1991)

Tim’s second appearance in “War of the Gods” isn’t much more eventful than his first.

I have this issue.

We’re back on the rooftop last seen in Wonder Woman #59. Tim listens to Diana tell Bruce about the Themysciran Goblet and how recovering it can help. She gives the duo some information and tells them that Inspector Indelicato can help, but Bruce tells her that they work alone. Tim then leaves with Bruce, swinging into the night.

1) This is Part Thirteen of the “War of the Gods” story.

2) Guess what? Tim doesn’t say anything…again!

WTF? Moment: This issue is 40 pages long, not counting ads. Tim (along with Bruce) is in one page. Ice is in more pages than that!

Robin III Part 36: Wonder Woman #59 (October, 1991)

Tim makes his first official appearance in the “War of the Gods” storyline.

I have this issue.

The War of the Gods comes to Gotham, and Tim looks on as Bruce and Wonder Woman have a chat.

Notes of Interest:

1) This is Part Eleven of the “War of the Gods” story.

2) Tim doesn't say a word…

WTF? Moment: …and he’s in all of two pages! Two panels technically since the first page is the splash page. You’d think that given the cover, there would have been more confrontation, conflict, heck…conversation.

WTF? Moment #2: I say “official” above because while Tim doesn't appear at all in War of the Gods #1 (aside from a mini poster...which isn't that good), he does appear on the cover of War of the Gods #1. He’s in the background behind many other characters. He’s not even next to Batman for crying out loud.
